Say It Ain't So, "Joe"

I like many other Republicans believe that we should tax as a last result but where I differ with the conservative faction of the party which believes in a flat tax, I believe in tax equality meaning each person pays an equal part of their earnings to the government in accordance to their income/assets. And if it comes to small businesses, mind you in my family/friends my grandparents owned their own flag shop for twenty years before retiring, one good friend owns her own restaurant and another owns several Burger Kings and her own real estate business. So I'm aware how paramount and essential small businesses are to America. That's why we have to get a better taxation system to make sure that it is take home pay that gets tax and not just general revenues as it is now.
I agree with John McCain that we have to make sure that we don't raise taxes on businesses that are barely surviving as it is. I also agree with Senator Obama that we must raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans in order to avoid fiscal decay under an alarming deficit while also making sure to make our tax system more progressive than regressive. We are told that small businesses will only get taxed on their profits but in all honesty how can you tell what is a profit and what is not? I suppose if the small business owner put themselves on payroll their tax home pay should be taxed but we have to beware taxing private business earnings which can be essential to building up capitol in hard times.

But now I have to help John McCain out one more time before I vote aganist him in a week. Stop with the "Joe the Plumber" thing. It's sad, pathetic and really, really annoying. I've talked with Democrats, Undecided Voters and Republicans and every single person hates Joe. People with blue collar jobs aren't embrassing over earning an honest wage but they don't introduce themselves as "Hi I'm Cindy the Waitress". They don't want to define themselves by their job. You can talk about the honest concerns of small business owners making over $250,000 a year in profits but realize that doesn't represent a large segment of the population.

Also about "Joe the Plumber" he's an idiot. Don't give him anymore of  the spotlight, you see I know far too many "Joes". They are always white, overweight, barely making ends meet, having huge dreams that one of their business ventures will bring them riches, and they always vote Republican. Why? Because they don't want their imaginary earnings taxed. And for the record, Joe's real name is Samuel, he is not a plumber, he is in no position to buy a business, he wouldn't earn that much money if he did manage to buy his own business, even if he did Obama wouldn't raise his taxes, Obama will actually lower his taxes more than McCain will and Joe doesn't pay his taxes to begin with.

I cannot think of a worse person to be using as your platform for the presidency than "Joe the Plumber". Senator McCain talk honestly about you tax plan and please do talk about the concerns of small business owners such as Lionel and Elinor who owned their flag shop, Paula who owns her own diner, Mary who owns her own franchise operations and real estate business. They all work very hard, and they also make a quite a bit of money that they earn every cent of. Talk about them Senator McCain and Senator Obama, they aren't your average Joes.

Limbaugh's Racism

I listened to Rush for years, but it saddens me to see such evidence of his racism now. I don't think he is an out and out "I hate black people" kind of racist but rather someone who has low opinions of African Americans and likes to lump them together. I also think that he would support an African American for President perhaps Rice, Blackwell, or Stelle if they ever ran. And again I do not believe that voting for McCain is racist. That's just silly, McCain is a decent person with decent ideas who while not getting my vote does get my respect. Of course McCain will be getting votes from racists but almost all of them were going to vote Republican already (how many racist Kerry voters were there?) but of course the vast majority of the party would welcome a star like Rice as their nominee.

I have to say all that because being called a racist is something that gets thrown out way too easily. When you have former Sen. Braun calling George Will (a political hero to me) a member of the Klu Klux Klan, it's wrong, dead wrong.

But Limbaugh statement that the only reason Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama was because they are both African Americans is racist. And since saying racist things is the only thing to tell who is a racist, we as Americans must conclude that Limbaugh is racist. Racists are thought to be only one type like those with white capes. In truth they are the minority of racists. During this campaign, I have seen the racism and you have to. We have all heard people say some very off color things, a co-worker starting spewing out how Obama would start black rule subjecting whites in some werird consipiracy sort of thing. We heard a few nuts at rallies and even more on the internet. This whole Obama-Osama crap.

It does such a diservice to the vast majority of good McCain supporters and McCain himself. Limbaugh statement is a part of that racism, someone who says things that are untrue and putting down people for the color of their skin. As anybody who knows Powell in just his public life knows that he has always been a liberal Republican he is pro-choice, pro-gay rights, and strongly against the military strategies of Iraq. This was well known back when people thought he would still endorse McCain. This was not new or news. Also to be said Powell served his country in uniform greater than almost anyone in this country. That is why a large part of this country cares about what Powell says. It should be noted that Limbaugh nor myself have not scarificed for this country.

Powell was clear that emotionally he would feel proud to see America honor Senator Obama and in affect all African Americans by saying that someone of a different skin color was worthy for the highest office in the land. That's understandable but if anyone thinks that Powell, one of the greatest military minds in this country, is only able to vote for someone is black because he is also, I have just one question for them, why didn't Powell endorse Jesse Jackson?

The Christopher Revolt

Republicans named Christopher are becoming the most unreliable voting group since the 1948 Dewey supporters. And as a Republican who will be voting proudly for Barack Obama come November, I realize that I'm in good company. As of last week both Christopher Hitchens (who I read more in The Weekly Standard than Vanity Fair) and Christopher Buckley (famed author and until a few days ago of National Review). Now it should be noted that both Hitchens, Buckley and myself who charitably be described as liberal Republicans and also of note they are great writers while I am so not.

But vote for Obama we shall, (Hitchens became an American citizen), and at first I was hesitant. For the first year and a half of this campaign I was a strong supporter of John McCain, disagreeing with him on some issues mainly abortion, gay rights and some tax issues but overall agreeing with him on everything else but really my support was based on the idea of John McCain. The honest fighter who would never give up on what he believes. I actually told everyone that I supported McCain because " he will be the only candidate never to lie to you". I was wrong, John McCain did lie multiple times many times maliously. I honestly don't know if he is a good man or not.

It was a strong change but I went from saying the daily talking points about Obama to actually getting to know him. At first his coolness was a turn off but then I say that is was his analytical mind that I respected and his temperment became an attribute. But this would not have been enough to change my vote but at the same time McCain became more bellicose and started his campaign of lies. It is not that I don't think Obama would have done things differently if he were in McCain shoes but McCain had the choice of doing the right thing (running honorably) when it was hard not when it was easy. It's very easy to be honorable when you are up 19-3 but hard when it is a 10-9 game.

Many of the Republican elite establisment of which I am not have endorsed Obama all for different reasons but he is a good man, a good candidate and will be a good President. The world will not end if he wins which most likely he will. I almost started writing what I think the party has to do when they lose in roughly 16 days. Sadly that is what many conservatives feel like. Voting for Obama feels good but that shouldn't be why you are putting a check next to his name, realize who he is not what you are told, his attitude, kindness and positions of the issues facing this country. His not Jesus returned but simply a good man. If only the real McCain would have shown up I have a feeling that while the outcome may not have changed you wouldn't have Colin Powell, Kathleen Parker, Charles Krauthemer, Christopher Buckley, Christopher Hitchens and yes Christopher Wensley (moi)  openly supporting Barack Obama. If Obama doesn't deserve to win (does anybody?) surely though John McCain and Sarah Palin deserve to lose.
